Rape of Black Women In The Jim Crow Era- Why Is It Left Out of History?

Why is the rape of black women during the Jim Crow era hardly ever spoken about, let alone learned about in history? I'm sure most of us are familiar with the fact that black men were lynched with a regularity during the Jim Crow era, but why aren't more people made aware of the fact that black women were routinely raped during ku klux klan riots, raped before being lynched and raped by racist white men who rarely were prosecuted for their crimes.

Why has no one heard of the story of Recy Taylor, a black woman who was coming home from church one evening in rural Alabama in 1944, when she was gang raped by six white men. Recy Taylor was blind folded and taken to the woods where six white men gang raped her. The six white men were never convicted of a crime against her, despite the fact that all confessed to kidnapping and raping her.

How come we are not taught about the stories of women like Betty Jean Owens a Florida student, who, in 1959, was gang raped by four white men, and late called a "n*gger wench," at the trial, where there was an all-white, all- male jury.

Why do we never hear stories of women like Lena Baker who was held as a virtual sex slave and was later sentenced to death by the electric chair, after killing the man who had abused her? This has recently been made into a movie, which showed in select theatres.

Hope & Redemption: The Lena Baker Story - Official Theatrical Trailer

it seems as if all these stories are wiped out of our history books and a national history. I never heard of these women until recently. I can't help, but feel that people do not want these young women's stories of rape and sexual abuse to get out and I am not sure why that is, but its not right.

Yes said it right Choc, here is why because it is HIS Story (histoory). My mom once broke it down to me like this when I was young. Why would society take the time to reveal what happen to woman and particularly black woman. Woman were still considered property despite the laws and so therefore black woman were not even considered property more like chattel just like black men. Now look at society today and how black women are being treated. Society has evolved and man has in the way of women and black women can now have their own homes, cars. The right to vote but as far as treatment wise some men still don't agree with this. That is one of the reasons why you have some men still walking around talking about women need to be sumbmissive not truly knowing what it means. My mom also told the only way these women will be heard is if women in general race excluded ban together and put these stories out there.

i just started reading this book now that i'm out of school...i just cn't believe that this whole thing is left out of history...like its just one big blank...just crossed out of history...its very sad...so Rosa Parks sitting on the bus was really just the tip of the iceberg, that was a decoy pretty much...
