This issue is rarely discussed openly, why White people place such importance on having tan or dark skin, maybe it because they know black skin is beautiful but Western society won't allow it to be openly praised due to the consequences it would have on the beauty industry/media!!!

I like the contrast in color and will have to agree with those ChocolateSmoothie et. al. on that one.  (My wife is dark skinned).  Another thing not mentioned here is the fact that white society places higher value on DARKER skin.  That's why WW pay big money for tanning booths; it's part of the white culture's concept of beauty.  White people have a colorism issue too.  They prefer men and women to be dark.  (I happen to be light skinned-Irish; I can't tan).

This topic made me think of when I dated this guy two years ago and I asked him to describe what I look like if he had to tell someone who didn't know who I was. One of the things that stuck out was, he said I was brown skinned, but not black.

The bottom line is that everyone has something that they find attractive to someone else. It's all subjective and it is more to do with how an individual feels about themselves. I may be considered pretty to some men and ugly to others, but I have never let it affect me or make me feel "less than."  The most attractive qualities that anyone can have are confidence and self-acceptance. Those things transcend color, imho.

I dont know if you have noticed this chocolate but I have. Have you noticed that if a black woman is dark but really attractive, somehow people will call her "light skin"? Like they associate light with being pretty so they subconciously see her as light skin. Maybe im the only one who notices that since im a loon with my observations. I saw an interview from that rnb singer who sang the song bday sex (cant think of his name) and they asked him his type of girl and he said light skin long hair and named tatyana ali as an example. Now obviously she is dark or at least close to dark, not light by any stretch of the imagination. Especially if a girl has so called "good hair" and is pretty but dark, she is referred to as light skin.

i think if she's pretty and dark/medium skin with "good hair" then they will include her into the light skin category.  if she's pretty and dark skin, but doesn't have the so called "good hair" then they will question what she's mixed with.  that will become a topic such as "i wonder what kenya moore is mixed with?" or is "jessica white mixed?".




i doubt if either of them is anymore mixed than the average black girl in america.

Why doesnt anyone mention medium when we make up a large portion of the black community? Black guys who prefer light girls will still date a medium brown girl as long as your not "too dark" so your not their first choice. Regarding the skin tone cast system:

I really don't get into the minutia of skin tone. I tend to think in 3: Dark-skinned ala Kelly Rowland; Brown skinned ala Taraji; and light-skinned ala Halle Berry.

The fact of the matter is "If she is fine she is fine." I really don't care what skin tone she is.

But truthfully, if she is darker-skinned, she will probably get my attention faster than a light skinned woman. Brown skin is will also get my attention before light skinned.

The fact of the matter is, light skinned have had it easier than brown skinned, and brown skinned have had it waaay easier than dark-skinned. Don't hate, congratulate!

I don't like to categorize BW into all the different subsets of color. I know its there but it seems a bit rude and disrespectful. My goodness! We are talking about people, not neckties!

I am not white, but I think I can speak to this because my SHNUGGUMS of 30 years is dark.

When I see a pretty light skinned woman, I notice cuz she's pretty. The "light" factor to me is no big whoop!

But when an attractive dark skinned woman is around, I notice faster. That's just my preference.

I think most nonBM aren't held sway by the skin tone cast system in this country that has infected Black America.

Many non-Black men however, are too scared to admit that they indeed love darker women cuzza societal peer pressure and subsequent embarrassment.

I hate not being 100 percent real. Ignorance is not bliss or at least not my bliss. Some of what I read from bw on IR forums I want to vomit to be honest. They are not telling the whole truth or at least not willing to acknowledge the whole truth. If we go by what is said on the internet, we would think that 90 percent of white men love black women and the only reason they arent dating us is because they are intimidated. We also are told that every single one that dates black women prefer the darker ones. Robin Thicke is NOT the only rich white guy with a light skin woman. Dawn youve already posted a few more and theres more I could post if I wanted to that I have found on the internet. Most of the bw/wm couples that are very dark bw/ very pale wm are regular joes. I have seen few rich white men with dark black women and that bw who married a prince is NOT dark skin at least not to me. Fact of the matter is tan or light brown golden color is something that is sought after by ALOT of men in general and its not just black men. Black men are just the ones who stress it so much. I had a white guy friend who dates nothing but black women admit to me he has only seen a handful of really dark black girls he has found attractive. He wasnt as hateful about it as black men were but he did not fit that stereotype of wm who like bw. He was very attractive so he had his pick and for the record he had more of a darker look. Just take a look at some of these white men in these YT vids that are with very dark bw and are very pale themselves, how many of these men are really attractive and can have any woman they want? Very few so I just cant go by what those people say white men prefer when those particular white men's options are much more limited than they would like to admit. They like who likes them. I dont mean to be superficial so I wont talk more about that. Its just those are the guys that other bw may use as a self estem booster but I find it insulting. I'd use Paul walker as a self esteem booster or the everyday equivalent lol. I use to date this guy who use to tell me how much he loved brownskingirls like me that werent dark or light and how I was just right. He also told me he hated light skin girls. I found his facebook page and he has listed "redbones" as part of his likes list. I just laughed. Men lie to please the girl their with meanwhile having whole other desires.

As for the biracial girls. I dont know why people keep saying white men dont like them. Im making a distinction between biracial and just regular light skin black girls with two black parents because the light ones with 2 black parents usually prefer black men. The biracial girls at least the ones where im at prefer white. So some white guys like them and are dating them. There has been a change with biracials in the last few years. They use to cling to their black side and date black or at least the girls did but now im seeing the younger ones date white guys. Black guys may love them but its not always mututal. And once again the white guys who like them do not always prefer white women. To me most biracials and light skin black women look nothing like Megan Fox, or Jennifer Aniston. They are obviously ethnic looking still to the white eye. I think white guys who like exotic women period(exotic meaning anything darker

If more light skin aka the Beyonce's openly express their interest towards white men as much as the dark skin ones do, I guarantee there will be more dating them. Ive already started seeing more of that not to say I see alot of bw with wm but from the ones I do, it use to be ONLY dark or african girls and recently ive seen all shades of brown. Light skin girls never had to consider white men because black men are constantly after them but now I think even light skin black girls arent light enough for todays black man so that may be one reason more light skin girls are starting to think about white men. I use to be on Interracial dating central and I would click to view the most popular members and most of the time it was some biracial girl and that is a site for people who want to date Interracially.

So I dont care how many may say on the internet white men prefer dark black women, thats a stereotype I have not always found to be true. I think black women sometimes use white men who IR as a self esteem booster and dont always see the reality of it.

And on page 5 a white guy says he finds all shades of bw attractive but the darkest ones goes out of their way to get his attention so that maybe one reason you see more dark bw with wm. He also stated that to get the light skin ones you have to be cute in addition to being white implying that all it takes is to be white to get the darker ones. Dont know if I agree with that last bit but just using him as an example of why the wm prefer dark bw is a stereotype and theres more to it why the non famous ones that date black end up with the darker ones. Its also a stereotype that only dark black men date white women like someone stated. I have seen every shade of black men with a white woman.

another GREAT post keisha!   i did not click on that topix link that you posted, but from everything you've said i have either witnessed, thought it, read it, heard it, believe, can relate to it, or can understand how you see it that way.

two quick things that i REALLY agree with are:  1.  light skin black women don't seem to be enough for many of today's black men.  2. light skin and biracial black men don't like black women the way they use to like them when i was growing up, and yes, they do date white women too!  oh and one more thing...i agree that biracial black women (especially the ones that are considered very pretty) will mostly only date good looking white men and/or rich white men, and not just a white man (that goes with the point of what i was saying when i said the rich and famous white men who date/marry black women are with the biracial or biracial black women just as much (or if not moreso) as dark skin women.  to me, that's how you can tell what people's general overall desire is, when people are rich (or are considered very good looking) what do they do?  that is also why i always say about 50% of black men do not really want black women (it's evident in the choices they make with women once they get rich and/or famous).

you cannot get a clear picture of people off the average everyday working joe because they only take what they can get.  you get the clear picture from what people do when they are rich, famous and/or considered very good looking by a lot of people because those people have plenty of choices, unlike all of the rest of us.

Hi guys I found this discussion and its rather interesting and thought that Id get in on this topic. I know that alot of bw would like to believe that wm who are into bw prefer the darker ones and just from my being a very observant person, I have seen thats true for some but not always the case and there are other reasons sometimes why there are more dark bw with wm than lighter ones. I dated a white guy who wasnt into white women at all yet I noticed that most of the black women that he noticed first just on tv or on the street were almost always lighter than I am. I am medium brown (think Meagan Goods color) and I didnt take offense to that because I knew he thought I was beautiful and he did notice and look at brown and dark skin black women but just the ones he would notice first were always light skin yet the black woman he dated before me was dark. People date whats the best thats available to them at the time. Not to say that they will date anyone. They still want you to be attractive but just cause their dating you
doesnt mean you are what they have set in their mind as their ideal type. Sometimes men tell you what they know you want to hear. White men who date black women know all about black women being hurt over black men being color struck so sometimes they say how much they love dark black women because that is what alot of black women want to hear and most bw interested in wm are the darker ones yet when you ask some of these men their celeb crushes guess who it is? It isnt a really dark girl. Its Rihanna, Tyra Banks, Beyonce etc.

Although, Lets put the whole light skin/dark skin stuff into perspective though. Everyone has a different chart of whats light, medium, or dark. We as black people through no fault of our own are color nazis so we notice every distinction of brown. Alot of what we call light skin is still considered dark to most of the world. Even Beyonce who is light to us, the media feels the need to lighten her skin on magazine covers and thin her nose out. Her natural color without any lighting to me looks like a honey color which is about the same color as many Filipinos who are considered DARK to most of the world. I doubt the white men dating filipinos think they are dating a "light skin girl". The only white people I know that go by all our categories are ones that grew up around black people. Obviously they know the difference between extremely light and extremely dark but all those different shades of brown, I dont believe most do.I prefer white men that dont
separate us into categories or think too deeply about what shade of brown a black woman is. When I date a white guy I dont want to hear who's too black or who's not black enough. The white guys ive dated always called me a dark skin black woman but to black people im medium or caramel brown.

So some white men may say they prefer dark black women but we dont know what color that even is. For some that means alek wek and for some that could mean anyone with some brown to their skin and darker. Most light skin black women (that arent biracial that is) that I know prefer dark skin black men. Those are the ones I hear say they love chocolate men and when I was coming up the few black women that I heard say they liked white guys were always dark and didnt get alot of play from black guys. Some of these women really wanted mixed kids as well. So even if it hurts to admit it for some, I do think rejection from your own race and color complexes plays a part in IR dating. Not for everyone but it is for some for the man and woman.

I, like someone already stated, prefer darker white men but does that mean that I must not like "real" white men cause I dont go for the blonds and pale skin? IMO they are all white. Even though I prefer the more italian look, the white guys ive dated were pale although attractive. I didnt date them cause they were my ideal. I dated them because they were attractive and those were the particular white men who asked me out. Thats something people havent mentioned. Alot of these really pale white guys like the red heads for instance are the ones going for black women. If I look at a youtube IR vid, 9/10 the guy is just as pale as she is dark. Greek/italian olive coloring white men from what I can see are sought after by all kinds of women and the paler white guys arent as desirable to white women so maybe they are more open to IR because of that reason and like I said before this doesnt apply to everyone but it does to some. I wont pretend thats not the case. If you saw the white guys ive dated, you'd have no idea that I really prefer a white guy with a full head of dark hair and medium to tanned skin.

The white men that I have met online that are really into color and want the black woman to be as dark as possible wont even date a medium brown skin girl like Taraji, Megan Good or myself. They want an Alek Wek cause that is the only thing they see as an authentic black woman and honestly even though Vanessa Williams may not look like the average black girl, neither does Alek Wek at least not in the United States. Arent most of us in between very dark and very light? So does that mean all the black women that arent very dark are somehow less of a black woman than the ones that are? I would have to disagree with anyone who implies that.

Also what constitutes a "real black woman"? Is it strictly based on skin color? What about the fact that alot of these white guys are with rail thin black women? Im not putting them down because im kinda slim myself but we all know thats not the traditional black womans body type. What about the fact that alot of these high fashion dark models that some white men tend to like dont even have traditonal negroid features? Yes black features are diverse but what do people think of when they think of black features? West African right? So what makes someone look more "black"? Is it skin color or features? Some of these dark black women arent much different than white women except the skin color so if a white guy goes for a dark black woman with a white womans figure and facial features over a Beyonce who's shaped like the average black woman, does it really mean he likes so called "real" black women more?

When i see a wm/bw coupling the girl tends to be medium brown to dark.

My friends room mate who's a white guy told her how he isn't normally attracted to light skinned black women but goes gaga for girls who's skin colour are uber dark, he said the contrast between the two skin colours, (and bare in mind this guy is a ginger so he's uber pale) he just loves, and he finds them physically more attractive.

But I think it boils down to preference, and the thing is since us as black people come in all different shades men will form their preferences.

As for the biracial girls. I dont know why people keep saying white men dont like them. Im making a distinction between biracial and just regular light skin black girls with two black parents because the light ones with 2 black parents usually prefer black men. The biracial girls at least the ones where im at prefer white. So some white guys like them and are dating them. There has been a change with biracials in the last few years. Hi guys I found this discussion and its rather interesting and thought that Id get in on this topic. I know that alot of bw would like to believe that wm who are into bw prefer the darker ones and just from my being a very observant person, I have seen thats true for some but not always the case and there are other reasons sometimes why there are more dark bw with wm than lighter ones. I dated a white guy who wasnt into white women at all yet I noticed that most of the black women that he noticed first just on tv or on the street were almost always lighter than I am. Although, Lets put the whole light skin/dark skin stuff into perspective though. Everyone has a different chart of whats light, medium, or dark. We as black people through no fault of our own are color nazis so we notice every distinction of brown. Alot of what we call light skin is still considered dark to most of the world. Even Beyonce who is light to us, the media feels the need to lighten her skin on magazine covers and thin her nose out. Her natural color without any lighting to me looks like a honey color which is about the same color as many Filipinos who are considered DARK to most of the world. I doubt the white men dating filipinos think they are dating a "light skin girl". The only white people I know that go by all our categories are ones that grew up around black people. Obviously they know the difference between extremely light and extremely dark but all those different shades of brown, I dont believe most do.I prefer white men that dont
separate us into categories or think too deeply about what shade of brown a black woman is. When I date a white guy I dont want to hear who's too black or who's not black enough. The white guys ive dated always called me a dark skin black woman but to black people im medium or caramel brown.

So some white men may say they prefer dark black women but we dont know what color that even is. For some that means alek wek and for some that could mean anyone with some brown to their skin and darker. Most light skin black women (that arent biracial that is) that I know prefer dark skin black men. Those are the ones I hear say they love chocolate men and when I was coming up the few black women that I heard say they liked white guys were always dark and didnt get alot of play from black guys. Some of these women really wanted mixed kids as well. So even if it hurts to admit it for some, I do think rejection from your own race and color complexes plays a part in IR dating. Not for everyone but it is for some for the man and woman.

I, like someone already stated, prefer darker white men but does that mean that I must not like "real" white men cause I dont go for the blonds and pale skin? IMO they are all white. Even though I prefer the more italian look, the white guys ive dated were pale although attractive. I didnt date them cause they were my ideal. I dated them because they were attractive and those were the particular white men who asked me out. Thats something people havent mentioned. Alot of these really pale white guys like the red heads for instance are the ones going for black women. If I look at a youtube IR vid, 9/10 the guy is just as pale as she is dark. I wont pretend thats not the case. If you saw the white guys ive dated, you'd have no idea that I really prefer a white guy with a full head of dark hair and medium to tanned skin.

The white men that I have met online that are really into color and want the black woman to be as dark as possible wont even date a medium brown skin girl like Taraji, Megan Good or myself. They want an Alek Wek cause that is the only thing they see as an authentic black woman and honestly even though Vanessa Williams may not look like the average black girl, neither does Alek Wek at least not in the United States. Arent most of us in between very dark and very light? So does that mean all the black women that arent very dark are somehow less of a black woman than the ones that are? I would have to disagree with anyone who implies that.

Also what constitutes a "real black woman"? Is it strictly based on skin color? What about the fact that alot of these white guys are with rail thin black women? Im not putting them down because im kinda slim myself but we all know thats not the traditional black womans body type. What about the fact that alot of these high fashion dark models that some white men tend to like dont even have traditonal negroid features? Yes black features are diverse but what do people think of when they think of black features? West African right? So what makes someone look more "black"? Is it skin color or features? Some of these dark black women arent much different than white women except the skin color so if a white guy goes for a dark black woman with a white womans figure and facial features over a Beyonce who's shaped like the average black woman, does it really mean he likes so called "real" black women more?

No Dawn. I DO have a preference of skin color. My words were misleading. What I meant, was the skin color of my fiancé does not apply. It does not matter to me at all that she is black, real black as in dark chocolate black.
I was brought up in a town pretty much secluded from blacks and never gave the black/white issue much thought while growing up; all I knew was that I was not a racist. But now that I live in a predominantly all black community and have been exposed to the various skin tones, as well as body and facial features of BW, I have grown to appreciate the beauty the BW has, that the WW does NOT have. to both of you...you are right...that's what this topic is about.  the creator of the article explains his/her theory to why that is true.  i agree to that there is SOME truth to the theory.  that is because celebrity men are with biracial women too...they have their choice and many of them go biracial.  that is why i agree their is some truth to the theory.  IF celebrity type men were with dark skin black women 9 out of 10 times, then i would say the theory was false.

since you are determined to keep this topic going, i'm going to add something else...not necessarily in response to what you have said, but something that has been said in general in this topic.  paraphrasing here...white men don't like biracial women because they are too close to being white women.  if they wanted a white woman they would just be with a white woman, but they want black women that is why they prefer dark skin black women...that theory is not correct.

i prefer white men who are dark.  if that theory were correct then i would prefer white men who are light and don't tan easily.  i am open to all men of all races, skin colors, etc, but my normal attraction is to white men who have "darker" features; however, having light eyes with those "dark" features is a plus!

This may be a bit of a stretch on the topic at hand butttttttttt I offer another opinion, 2 really. Tanning Salons are a multi-billion dollar industry, or at least they were several years ago when I lived up there in the 'Matrix'. Darker skin (or skin with some color) vrs. really white skin, simply looks healthier. Darker skin, whether it be from a tan or from natural coloration justs looks better. Why else would so many WW spend hours in the blazing sun, 'shooting craps' with their personal health?
On the bi-racial note, possibly the inherited anglo saxon facial features of a bi racial woman makes the rich white guys more comfortable personally, as well as more comfortable in social situations. Possibly a BW could just be a novelty for a man with everything, so he chooses a light complected woman with white facial features to ease any insecurity that he may have about being with a black woman.

I also think that the media don't give dark skinned women the credit they deserve . We have an ex-super model in the UK called Lorraine Pascal who has recently given up her career and taken up her first love of baking. She stars in her own show 'Baking Made Easy'. She's beautiful and incredibly sexy but hasn't yet been given the credit that Nigella Lawson ( a purportedly sexy white cook) with her own show.

i don't think that's what the article writer is saying.  here's the quote:

Why White Men Like Dark Skinned Black Women -

yes, i think there's some truth to that.  the reason why i agree with that is because i have noticed that rich and famous white men are mostly with biracial or light skin black women, and the regular everyday white men are with darker skin black women.  so my point is, the rich and famous white men have an easier time getting ANY woman of their choice than the every day white man.  so if they, the rich and famous white men end up with biracial and light skin black women, that means they chose to be with her...they didn't have to be with dark.  it's the same with biracial men...there was a time when they loved dark skin women (because they didn't have much choice)...but now...PA LEESE, they love biracial and non black women more...especially the famous ones...they are worse than the black-black famous men when it comes to running away from black-black women.

what my response is saying is, that there seems to be a general stereotype that white men who like black women like the ones with dark skin, especially very dark skin.  my point is this...i do not think that stereotype is 100% true and that is because i see JUST AS MANY (if not more) wealthy (and somewhat attractive) white men with biracial and biracial looking black women...so that tells me that white men do NOT have a PREFERENCE for darker skin black women (when they like black women), although they still DO like dark skin, but i do not think it's a high preference like some will have you believe.  also, with that being said, i can agree with the writer of this article is saying to a certain extent because non wealthy white men, the everyday ones you see on the street (every so often because it's still rare), are mostly with darker skin women, and not so much with biracial ones or biracial looking ones.  while their richer counter parts are with the lighter ones just as often, or maybe even moreso.

I am very attracted to dark skinned women , but it has nothing to do with a shortage of bi racial or light skinned women. I just find dark skinned women more appealing to me.

Why White Men Like Dark Skinned Black Women

Once I heard a theory about why white men tend to date darker skinned black women.  This is not necessarily my opinion, just something I read somewhere.

Someone said that white men go for darker black women because the biracial to lighter skinned ones are already in demand and taken off the market by black men.  The white man wants a black woman but he thinks he doesn't have a chance with the lighter ones because she is either already taken, or she gets plenty of attention from black men and probably doesn't feel the "need" to date out. 

So he goes for the darker woman who likely isn't taken and who likely isn't inundated with love from the brothas (and therefore perhaps more willing to give a white guy a chance).


Again, this is just something I read once. 

Is there any truth in that?

I haven't heard of this theory before. That might apply to some WM, but I believe it is more likely to be an "opposites attract" reason, in which they really are more attracted to the sharper color contrast of dark skinned women.

from what I've observed, I've seen more weathy WM/everyday WM with dark skinned BW than with light skinned BW (please see pics below). 
From my  first hand life observations, it seems as if more WM prefer dark skinned BW to light skinned WW because if they want a lightskinned women, they can go for a WW instead of a lightskinned BW.  Also, I've heard that WM view ALL BW as "dark skinned" compared to any White person and they don't necessarily view "dark skin" as a negative factor in dating BW like MANY ignorant, self hating, RACIST ANTI-BW BM do.

yes, i think there's some truth to that.  the reason why i agree with that is because i have noticed that rich and famous white men are mostly with biracial or light skin black women, and the regular everyday white men are with darker skin black women.  so my point is, the rich and famous white men have an easier time getting ANY woman of their choice than the every day white man.  so if they, the rich and famous white men end up with biracial and light skin black women, that means they chose to be with her...they didn't have to be with dark.  it's the same with biracial men...there was a time when they loved dark skin women (because they didn't have much choice)...but now...PA LEESE, they love biracial and non black women more...especially the famous ones...they are worse than the black-black famous men when it comes to running away from black-black women.
